If you’ve run out of good shows to binge-watch on Netflix or you want to brush up on some Español, here are some amazing Spanish shows to check out on Netflix Canada. By watching at least one or more of these amazing shows you will also be able to learn more about the countries of Colombia and/or Spain plus you will be able to see many beautiful locations, learn about their culture, their way of life, history. For example, by watching Siempre Bruja (Always a Witch) you will be able to see the beautiful city of Cartagena which is on the coast of Colombia. Another example if you watch Gran Hotel you will see how Spain looked in the early 1920’s, what their customs were and how they lived in that time period.
Siempre Bruja
This Colombian show was made in 2019 by Netflix and Caracol (a Colombian channel) The show it’s about a slave that was burned in 1646 because she was accused of being a witch. Before she was burned though during her night on jail she sees a man who tells her not to fear what will happen and if she does a task for him he can save her so after she is “burned” she then travels to 2019 in Cartagena Colombia where she has to beat another dark wizard.
During this time she meets people and another witch which warns Carmen of the danger of Lucien (wizard who is burning other witches in this time) and who she has to beat in order to go back home. Carmen learns new things in 2019 and even learns to use social media apps, as well as smartphone and makes new allies and likes this time better than the time where she was from as she is now free to do many things that she could not because of her race and status. This series has 10 episodes and it can be seen in Spanish and English and it also has Spanish subtitles. This show is also a free adaptation of a book called Yo, Bruja. I would recommend this show not only because it is a great show in itself but also because of the places where the show are shot which are beautiful.
The historic things you can learn not just about the history but about Colombia as well. One of the reasons why I recommend this show is because I find it very interesting seeing the history of religion, science and customs have evolved over time as well as how technology has become a part of us in this age; also it is interesting seeing magic and science come together which is a great mix. Another reason is because of how pretty all of the settings are they really did a good job capturing the beauty of Colombia’s coast. By the way I can now update saying that season 2 is coming out in February 28th, 2020.
Gran Hotel
This show is set in 1905 about all the mysteries that occur in a hotel in Spain. This show is filled with murders and mysteries that happen in a big hotel where pretty much every character has something to hide. The show starts when Julio’s sister who was a maid suddenly disappears and Julio infiltrates himself in the hotel as a waiter to find out the truth about his sister and on the way there, he uncovers many other truths and learns the past of his sister.
This show is really good and will make you want to keep going because nothing in this hotel is as it seems. There is always something new happening and a new twist around every corner. This show has also been broadcasted around many countries in the world and it’s very well regarded. This show is also very comical as it is very entertaining to watch the show’s detective with his less witted partner. This show is in Spanish but does have English subtitles. I would recommend this show not only because it is very captivating and full of mystery as well as for the comedic parts of the 2 detectives.
La Casa de Papel (Money Heist)
This Spanish show is also from Spain and was made by Netflix. This show is about a bank robbery and how the thieves get into the bank of Spain in Madrid. How they kidnap everyone inside and how they deal with the police. However, not everyone that plan this “thievery” is inside as the “professor” is in the outside world and deals with the police and his “team” to ensure their success. One thing to note is that all of the main characters’ names (the thieves) have cities nicknames from around the world. This show can be watched in English and Spanish and also has English and Spanish subtitles. This show I would recommend because it is a very interesting show because of the elements that this show has such as historic, the suspense and action that this show has.
El Barco
This Spanish show is also from Spain. The show is about some students that aboard a boat to go on a research field trip; however, very soon after their departure, they get involved in a mystery as there is an explosion and they learn that most of the world has been destroyed, and they must find a way to survive in the boat as well as plan a new life since the earth has changed. This show is also full of mystery, drama and secrets as it seems not everyone appears to be who they say they are, and everyone is hiding something. The crew and characters must also learn about the company responsible for what happened in the land and they learn they were chosen to board as part of an experiment of survival.
Later on they also learn that there might be a piece of surviving land in a small continent and they must race to it before their supplies run out and before they are all killed. The mystery even goes deeper as that boat had some connection to similar events in the past. This show can be seen in Spanish with English subtitles. I would recommend this show because not only is a pretty unique show story wise but also because the story is once again very captivating and you want to find out what happens after every episode as well as many secrets from the people on board. Find out what they are hiding as well as if everyone will be able to survive this ride on the boat, or if they will be able to find a new land to call home.
